Sound Forge is a well-known tool for those who seek digital audio editing and recording. Although regularly up-to-date, the long period of use during its development process has often been criticized as resulting in both improved and worsening problems. In today's article, we will examine Sound Forge's history, features, and current outlook on the market. Sound Forge was originally developed by Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH & Co. KG until September 2011 when it was sold to software giant Hewlett Packard Company (HP). Initially, multiple software companies were involved in its development, including Steinberg (known for Cubase), Microsoft (who initially acquired Winamp), and Peter Ian Molnar. The initial system architecture was also constructed by Molnar. Sound Forge has the ability to edit almost all kinds of recorded audio files (both digital and analog), enhancing both quality and performance. There are numerous functions for recording purposes, but few for editing purposes aside from basic cut, copy, paste features that could be found in any non-linear editor. Despite these limitations, Sound Forge is still commonly used today due to its low cost compared to other commercially available software for audio editing. History Sound Forge was first released in 1991 for DOS by Timidity, an independent software company. Due to its high demand, it was later released for the Mac system in 1995. Sound Forge was then bought out by Paul 'Pablo' Cox in 1995 who moved the development of Sound Forge to his newly created subsidiary company, Sonic Foundry. It was branded as Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 2 in 1996, followed by the rebranding of Sonic Foundry to Sony Creative Software Inc. in 2002. Later, in 2011, Sony sold Sound Forge to Hewlett Packard Company (HP). Features Sound Forge has many features; however, they are mainly used for recording and editing purposes. Two of the more prominent tools in Sound Forge that come into play when editing audio files are the effects and effects chains. The effect chains feature is discussed in greater detail next, but essentially is a way to make various types of editing easier by making undo actions automatically. The ease of use comes from the fact that you can pre-record all your commands with buttons on your mouse or keyboard. Effects Chains  relies on applying one command after another without any problem, but there is no way to save these chains in their permanent form unless you use the special Save As function. Effects Chains can be made with a drag and drop or a long-press of the [key] button. There are six types of effects chains: 1. The "Basic" chain consists of six effects which can be applied in any order to add a variety of effects. The usefulness of this type comes from the fact that you can completely customize it for your own personal needs. Another advantage is that you have the ability at any time to change the order these effects are applied in by simply holding down on an empty part of the chain and dragging again. 2. The "Toggle Effects" chain has eight effects that can be switched on or off depending on your preferences for each effect. eccc085e13
